YOU’VE ONLY GOT UNTIL SATURDAY NIGHT to see the incomparable Jim Bailey do Judy Garland at the Leicester Square Theatre!!!!
Paul and I went last night to see a trooper and a star, an uncanny mimic but in the deepest sense of the word. This isn’t some throwaway impersonation, Bailey has built “being” Judy Garland into an artform in itself. Apparantly when Paul went with Hamish Bowles to see him in the early 90’s, Hamish took out his contact lenses so he would see “her”.
It’s a moving scene, one that goes in and out of focus somehow, where you lose yourself for a moment as he fusses his hair and pulls down his shirt just as Judy would do it, or whistles the pronounciation of a “wh”, in just the same way she would.
This is the Judy Judy herself loved. The one Liza used to catch at his late show when they were both playing in Vegas. And she’s in our town for a few more days!!! Other than drag you down there by your hair what can I do…oh, I found out today there are some cheaper tickets on Lastminute.com so I suggest you snap them up, sharpish!!!
