Jane Simpson and I were on Foundation at Winchester Art College back in the olden days and through the reuniting wonders of Facebook we’ve been sporadically in contact; in fact I relished Jane’s words of encouragement re this blog and then the Tupperware connection led me on an internet snoop that has resulted in proper fandom on my part.
I remember seeing Jane’s piece in the Sensation exhibition and probably making more of the fact that I knew her in my head than the piece itself, but my goodness, the lady doth cast Tupperware!!!! (the GOOD stuff, she was obviously brought up with the exact same lidded beakers and car picnics as me being born in the same year!) Her work is my favourite combination of very obviously female in origin but so bloody clever (obviously another female attribute!) and even with a sense of humour (I came across a “Self Portrait With Lost Marbles” on my travels). You should check out the images on the Gering & Lopez gallery website where she had a solo show last year in New York because I couldn’t drag any off to put on here and they’re incredible. The refrigerated pieces deserve a whole other post on their own but are poignant….household objects covered in a layer of impermanent frost become a metaphor for dissolution and temporality….Always good to find a kindred Tupperware lover to share with the world!!
