I can honestly say that something happened to me for the first time today – which at my age you don’t get to say that often! – and it was having an earful of hailstones! Phew! Nature filled my orifice with freezing diamonds in a matter of seconds as we townees (Paul and I) joined James and Ivor on an ill-advised gambol on the Downs in Brighton. It was hilarious (Paul’s yet to see the funny side but he will, he will..) how the day went from bright, breezy and bracing to 2012 GLOBAL CATACLYSM and we were stuck out in the middle of a field, completely exposed with nowhere to hide…just like John Cusack and Thandie Newton I imagine…..
But the best part was shivering and shaking our way back to James’ where I could chuck my WW1 nurses dress into the tumbler without too much worry and Paul, eyeing his vintage Yohji trousers gingerly folded them over a towel rail. We got cosy in front of the fire in robes and bedsocks, talked of Josephine Baker, Gaby Deslys, Stephen Tennant, Erté, oh all manner of gay banter while drinking cracking coffee out of bone china tea cups and eating mighty fine omelettes…simple pleasures…and back to town in time to pick the boys up from school! It’s unbelievable that you can be in Brighton in under an hour and when we make the effort it’s so envigorating (perhaps a bit too envigorating today!) to get out of town even for a morning. So James kindly scanned one of his many incredible JB photographs for me – in fact I kept his arty crop – and she’s Madame’s flyer star for tomorrow night at the George and Dragon…do hope to see you there.

Madame added these words on Nov 26 09 at 10:10 amI didn’t want it to turn into a shopping list of camp but I’m impressed at the waterfront covered in a mere few hours…..I always feel very uplifted but also EDUCATED by these trips!!!!!!!! x
Beniah Brawn added these words on Nov 26 09 at 11:24 amThe camp shopping list could have been longer! I forgot Brenda Dean Paul, not to mention Ramón Novarro and his Lalique dildo. And I’m sure James could remember a few more icons who came up in the course of the day!
Madame added these words on Nov 26 09 at 11:32 amOMG yes, the Art Deco dildo “Lalique I think you’ll find….” I bet nowhere else in the world was anyone having a similar conversation!!! Ha ha ha!!!
