Between the banging headache/sinus ache and general malaise I find myself prey to tonight and my general lack of joie de vivre earlier in the week, last night was a blip of excitement what with Tatty Devine and the party to celebrate Candy magazine at the George. In fact, just realised I published this half-written….Lemsip delerium presumably…..

So…as I say…Candy is a fashion magazine dedicated to the the celebration of transvestism, transexuality, cross dressing and androgyny. Before I go any further can I roar a huge HOOOOORAY for that!!! We live in strange times where, if you look in the right places, being yourself and expressing your individuality fearlessly is celebrated, but turn the corner and you might get a knife in your back for exactly that. What is wonderful about Candy is the fun with which it has been conceived and presented to the world. I remember talking to Daniel Lismore in Paris and he was saying how he feels that there’s been gay liberation but never tranny liberation which sounds like quite a throwaway line but I think has more than a nugget of truth.

Candy is a beautiful, glossy, practically perfect volume; not least for Brett Lloyd’s tribute to Casa Susanna (several of the ladies of Casa Susanna have appeared on my Madame flyers over the years and apart from pangs of “my” secret favourite going overground, it’s an incredible shoot), the homages to Candy Darling and Quentin Crisp and Joey Arias and heavyweights like Bruce Weber and Terry Richardson’s involvement, this isn’t as frivolous as it would like to appear. I sat and had a chat to Charles (above) who appears in one of the shoots, he’s only 16 but his androgynous style and translucent beauty have already been well documented in Pop and all over the interweb and I got to know him a bit in Paris when he used to manage to sneak in to Ponystep. He came for the night and back to school in Paris the next day and despite demure appearances will probably be the next Rick Owens or something after he graduates from St Martins as he intends. There weren’t any freebies knocking about so I decided to invest TWENTY FIVE POUNDS on a copy of my own…still, I’m proud to support the venture and top marks to Luis Venegas for getting this project to happen. I hope they leave the group shot up in the George and Dragon (above) for a bit of Casa Richardette….
