Mum’s back at home after her hip operation, and I’m back in town again after a week living at hers, visiting, ferrying visitors, just looking after stuff…
I had imagined long walks on the beach every day and only got to go once on a bright but ear-achingly and beautifully bleak day (we actually get CROWS on the beach in Gosport, but maybe they were goth crows meeting up to decide which Halloween party they were going to hit…).
I always like to check in at the pool our parents used to take us to every summer, and my boys were splashing in only a couple of months ago because I always think it looks kind of heartbreaking in the the winter months…but gorgeous too. Lots of teen graffiti, giving some poor sod’s number for gr8 BJs, and every brick with a ghost of kneetremblers past….probably…I’m not saying me….
My Mum was heroic, determinedly up-tempo and did as she was told so hopefully she’ll be doing the can-can by Christmas. And a side-effect of time spent alone in her house for me was that I had a chance to be thinky for once, which was quite healing for me…

michael added these words on Nov 02 09 at 10:54 amI love a bleak beach. It’s my dream to live at the seaside, especially for the off season. I think it’s so romantic.
Great pictures by the way…
Madame added these words on Nov 02 09 at 11:12 amI agree…as long as you think about ear-coverage it’s as good as summer if not better! And there’s hardly anyone there, so everything – even litter, takes on a wierd poignancy. Thanks re pics! xxx
Sarah added these words on Nov 02 09 at 1:25 pmDItto about winter beaches and your pix. And so glad trip and op went well. Beautifully evocative post. Xx Though J would have crowned me if I’d displayed his wound pix!!
Madame added these words on Nov 02 09 at 8:11 pmPraise indeed from thee!! I just couldn’t waste a good bruise – and it was a WHOPPER!!!!!!!
michael added these words on Nov 03 09 at 9:59 amI got a bruised and swollen leg that looked like a big deep purple pop-sock when Julian De Sade jumped on me (in a friendly way) at The Beautiful Bend…it was worth it ! I’ve got bruise pics somewhere from the disco damage years…
Madame added these words on Nov 03 09 at 10:58 amThose I’d like to see, love a good bruise….and why did they never make a purple pop sock? Probably did in the 70’s actually…..
Beniah Brawn added these words on Nov 03 09 at 6:44 pmI had purple lurex pop socks in the 70s, so yes I can confirm they did exist! And I’m happy to concur with Michael and Sarah re: your beautiful and evocative pics … they remind me of Brighton in the winter. So many places I’ve been are better in the winter than the summer. Pretty much any tourist destination, actually!
Madame added these words on Nov 03 09 at 9:57 pmTrue. I think what we’re all saying is winter is the new summer! Yes, if anyone rocked a purple pop sock it would be you! (with a halter top and wedges no doubt!) x
Sarah added these words on Nov 03 09 at 10:19 pm“winter is the new summer” is the kind of thing all sorts may say in the first heady sweater waring days of Autumn proper, – but I defy you to find anyone who things that come the third week in January [actual winter]… Not that I haven’t been wrapping myself up in scarves and enjoying my coat collection too recently. xx What about ladies night in Dungeness [sic?] in Jan?
Madame added these words on Nov 04 09 at 8:15 amActually you’re quite right Sarah….what are we, two weeks into winter (ish)…..? But at least aaaaaaaaaall those coats get to come out of the closet!!!!!! Shall we remind ourselves of this post mid-Jan and see how we all feel?? !! xx
Beniah Brawn added these words on Nov 05 09 at 11:51 amRe: halter top. Actually, more often with a boob tube!
