Stevie surprised the boys and me with tickets to see Blanca Li’s Electro Kif dance crew at the Purcell Room on Saturday night.
Electro is the starting point, but amongst the familiar street dance vocabulary of locking and popping and breaking, there is something altogether more lyrical and playful. In contrast to the very macho, confrontational battles and tight, aggressive stock moves of the generic street dance company, here was voguing, contemporary dance and an effortless grace which only comes from exhaustive hard work and rehearsal.
That the choreographer is a (fabulous) woman, Blanca Li is key. I met her for about 60 seconds and she exudes incredible energy and charisma – a choreographer, film director, dancer and actress, she is much quoted as saying, “I like to give life to all that’s in my brain.” Fearless and expressive, she’ll take inspiration from any form of movement and these boys between the ages of 18-22 vicariously and perfectly embody her incredible spirit.
Duke and Joe got every single dancer to sign their programme…and Joe got a bit of ink, “I’ve got dancers blood.” So cool.
If you ever get the chance to see them – GO GO GO!!!!
