Street dance as theatre. The Boy Blue hip hop crew are artistic associates of the Barbican and their residency this week (until the 25th) opened last night with a show which was heavy on plot to begin with but which gained pace and crescendoed in an explosion of aggressive krumping, breaking and tightly synced formation.
Which is what we wanted to see.
But credit due for testing the boundaries of a genre. The music by ‘Mikey J’ Asante deserves as much of a mention as Kenrick Sandy’s choreography, composed for Over The Edge and making this a self-contained artistic unit with an energy and force which should take them to Vegas baby by this time next year!!
I may be biased but Stevie Stewart’s bodysuits in the UV section were incredible – something fabulously Daft Punk about the whole number – and just looking at my top picture here…how ‘Francis Bacon goes hip hop’ is that????
