Liza and I went to Shoreditch House last night for Wired, in the appropriately-named ‘biscuit tin’ bar on the 4th Floor. My pet noir? Members clubs who will let you enter their hallowed walls, only to cram you, the lesser public, into a tiny space and restrict your movements. Literally, there was a bouncer stopping anyone from going ANYWHERE…they’ll take your money though, once you’ve queued for EVAH along with your fellow riff raff. OK, got that out of my system.
Viktoria Modesta was headlining and was worth waiting (sardine-like, ok, so now it’s out of my system…) for. I’ve only ever seen her in still pictures and she is mesmerising to watch since it’s almost as though there’s an imaginary photo-shoot going on in her head. Like Dita von Teese, not a hair, hand or hip movement isn’t aesthetically considered, placed and held just long enough for the flashes to capture it.
I’m so glad Liza posted this song on YouTube since it was my favourite, slightly on the ska-tip, like early No Doubt with an underlying merry-go-round spinning under the surface. I love the clash of references; the Depeche Mode reel-to-reel, the geisha hair, the twirling mannequin doll….
